Meadows Argues Case Should Be Heard in Washington, D.C., Not Georgia
A federal appeals court has rejected former Trump White House chief of staff Mark Meadows's request to transfer his 2020 election case from Georgia to Washington, D.C.
The 11th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled on Tuesday that Meadows did not provide sufficient evidence to support his claim that he would not receive a fair trial in Georgia. The court also noted that Meadows had already waived his right to a change of venue by participating in the discovery process in the Georgia case.
Meadows is facing charges of voter fraud and conspiracy in connection with his efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election in Georgia. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Meadows's attorneys argued that the case should be moved to Washington, D.C., because he is a resident of Virginia and because the alleged crimes occurred in multiple states.
However, the appeals court found that Meadows failed to show that he would be prejudiced by a trial in Georgia. The court also noted that the vast majority of the evidence in the case is located in Georgia.
The appeals court's ruling is a setback for Meadows, who has been trying to delay his trial. The case is now scheduled to begin on September 19, 2023.
